Rubric for Sociology Semester Research Project


Thesis and Question Development (12 points)
  • Thesis based on a creative, provocative question that is original in nature or contributes to the existing knowledge in a focused area
  • Student posed focused questions that lead to challenging research



Research/Content (source pages) (25 points)
  • Information was gathered from a variety of quality electronic and print sources.
  • Source pages are carefully documented.
  • Source pages are thoughtfully annotated.


Analysis (25 points)
  • Video essay (VoiceThread) and/or essay script alone display careful analysis of information, appropriate and inventive conclusions supported by evidence.


Synthesis (25 points)
  • Video essay and/or essay script alone are logically and creatively organized.
  • Video essay and/or essay script demonstrates use and mastery of evidence collected.
  • Video essay and/or essay script demonstrates effective communication skills and use of media (Media for video only)
  • Video displays student understanding of information ethics. (Use of copyright-friendly media, documentation) (Video project only)



Pathfinder Design (12 points)
  • Pathfinder will be useful to other student researchers.
  • Pathfinder design is attractive and aesthetically pleasing.
